This week in our study (Tuesday evenings at 7 PM), we looked at the decree of God. As part of his, we discussed the three ways the phrase “will of God” is used in the Bible.
They are:
- His sovereign decretive will – the will by which God brings to pass whatsoever He decrees. This is hidden to us until it happens.
- His preceptive will – God’s revealed law or commandments, which we have the power but not the right to break.
- His will of disposition – God’s attitude or disposition. It reveals what is pleasing to Him.
Understanding how the phrase is used in a specific passage of Scripture is important to fully comprehending the meaning of the text.
